How To Measure A Floor When Installing Tile, Laminate, Vinyl or Hardwood

It's time for new flooring for your home, office, or rental. What now? First, you would need to know how many square feet of flooring space you would like to redo. In the video below, we show how to do exactly that.

How To Calculate Square Feet

  • Get a piece of paper for writing down all the measurements
  • Visually divide up your space into square or rectangle spaces, draw on your paper as needed
  • Measure out your space - for rectangular and square mini spaces - two of the walls
  • If your dimensions are in inches - multiply both numbers and then divide by 144 to get square feet (12 in x 12 in = 144 = 1 square foot)
  • If your dimensions are in feet, then you would multiply both numbers and the total is your square footage. For example, if two sides are 12 ft x 12 ft = 144 square feet.
  • Add up all the totals for the mini spaces

For each type of flooring, whether it is porcelain tile, laminate flooring, click vinyl plank, you would need to consider a waste factor for cuts and corners. For example, for a square room, you would want at least a 5% waste of material in addition to your square footage. If the space is not completely square and you have more cuts to make, then a minimum of 10% would be recommended

For products that are second choice, such as B grade tile, at least 15% of additional material is recommended for waste.

Please consult your salesperson regarding how much waste is recommended to buy for your laminate, tile, hardwood, or vinyl flooring. It is also recommended that you keep several extra boxes of material in case of future repairs due to flood, etc. It is often that specific colors and styles get discontinued and, therefore, good to be prepared.
